Another successful quiz night!
A huge thank you to the Dinner Ladies - although they have stepped down from their annual dinner responsibilities they have still expressed an interest in hosting fundraising events for the club and this was no exception! The quiz was a great success with 8 teams taking part! With deductions for the night a total of £343.35 was raised for the club. Thanks to the Optimists Club for allowing us the use of their room (and bar) and a huge thanks for Pete Blandin for being our quiz master for the evening! This seemed like the perfect time to say farewell and thank you to our Dinner Ladies - Pat and Marilyn. As most of you know they have been hosting our Annual Dinner for the last 20 years and completing fundraising events throughout the years too. It's the end of an era and the committee wanted to show just how grateful we are as a club for all their hard work and effort over the years. |
McLaughlin Memorial Swim Congratulations to committee member/Treasurer Marilyn Le Guilcher who was awarded the McLaughlin trophy by Jean at this mornings McLaughlin memorial swim for supporting swimmers and always being there to lend a helping hand! 29 swimmers alongside 2 kayakers took to the water at Green Island. |
Swim for Lily - Charity event
Each year the club selects a charity to hold a fundraising swim for - this year we were approached by member and volunteer Billie Cave who suggested we host a 'Swim for Lily'. Lily McGarry was diagnosed with meningococcal septicaemia, a severe and aggressive infection which caused severed blood flow issues and Lily lost all four limbs as a result. Lily was an active triathlete and runner and it seemed only fitting to support a fellow athlete to help rebuild her her life - and it was also her 24th birthday that day too!
Unfortunately, as with lots of events we look forward to, the weather gods were not on our side, and the committee had to make the difficult decision to cancel the official club swim due to high winds and choppy waters. This didn't stop over 50 islanders braving the weather at their own risk to support Lily and a huge £500 was raised.
Shout out to St Catherine's Cafe for staying open to provide a hearty meal for all swimmers after their dip! And a huge well done to Billie Cave for organising such a successful charity swim.
We wish you all the best Lily x

Flambard Trophy winner - Ellie Garrattley The Ann Flambard swim was held on a Saturday this year to tie in with the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame. Even with the change of day we still had a fantastic turn out! A huge congratulations to Ellie Garrattley who was awarded the Flambard trophy for her courage and enthusiasm to open water swimming - she has come such a long way in such a short space of time and it has not gone unnoticed! Well done Ellie! |

Farewell to John Medder
In March we received some incredibly sad news - our much loved and capable kayaker John Medder passed away at Jersey Hospice with Dee and his two boys by his side after a short illness. He will always be remembered for his sense of humour, expertise on the water and willingness to volunteer - all with a smile on his face. Our condolences go to his beloved partner Dee and his two sons Andrew and James. |
Farewell to the Dinner Ladies - Pat and Marilyn After an extremely successful 50th anniversary dinner in November 2024, the Dinner Ladies Pat and Marilyn made the difficult decision to hang up their hats and step down. We will be eternally grateful for their experience, knowledge, ideas, hard work and enthusiasm over the last 20 years! Every year a new theme, every year better than the last! Every decoration, raffle prize and gift over the years were paid for through money Pat and Marilyn had fundraised throughout each year! Even with an incredible 50th anniversary celebration they still had £1250.00 left over from their hard earned 'pot' which they have kindly donated to the clubs defibrillator fund! I think you will all agree with the Committee in giving a huge thank you for all the fantastic dinners over the past 20 years and we will miss our Dinner Ladies! End of an era !! |
New Years Day Swim 2025
We were all looking forward to welcoming in the New Year with our annual swim, however the weather gods had other ideas! After monitoring the weather forecasts around the clock, the JLDSC committee made the difficult decision to cancel due to increased high winds blowing directly into the bay. We want to remind members that we do not make these decisions lightly but safety must come first - especially on such a popular swim with a wide range of abilities and experience! Often we will attend the venue on the day and make a decision on the spot, however, we knew it wasn't looking good and wanted to give members time to make other plans for their New Years Day!
