JLDSC Open Competition
St Catherine’s was again the venue for the first JLDSC Open Water Championship on Sunday 21st September with some 22 Jersey swimmers entered to participate in the Junior and Senior races. This inaugural competition was restricted to local swimmers with an affiliation to a Jersey club. To ensure fair play officials Les Debenham and Paul Kendal were recruited from the United Kingdom and they together with various other local coaches officiated on the day
Unfortunately the weather was not as kind to us on this occasion as it had been the previous week. The Junior’s race proved to be a test of endurance when the slight swell present at the start of the race developed into a large swell as the turn of the tide approached with the wind also picking up as time passed.
Nevertheless the children were not to be outdone by the conditions and proved to be well up to the challenge. One of the youngest competitors aged twelve swam the 3km course in just under two hours. A very creditable time given the atrocious conditions towards the end. A Channel swimmer in the making surely?
The winner of the junior ladies event was Katherine Lowe from Tigers Swimming Club (Tigers) in a time of 55 minutes 42 seconds. Katherine did well to stay on the course despite the strong wind that pushed many of the other competit
ors off course.
The winner of the junior men’s event was Thomas Nerac from the Jersey Long Distance Swimming Club (JLDSC) who completed the course in a time of 1 hour 15 minutes and 25 seconds.
It was decided to shorten the senior course from 5km to 3km in view of the prevailing weather conditions although after the turn of
the tide the conditions were greatly improved. In the senior events the winners were Tracey Huish (JLDSC) and Daniel Halkesworth (Tigers) in times of 1 hour 1 minute 53 seconds and 50 minutes 59 seconds respectively.
Our grateful thanks are extended to all those members of the JLDSC who came to help out on the day and especially to Kevin Mansell and members of the Canoe Club who provided such excellent safety cover for our swimmers.
Thanks also to our sponsors on the day KPMG for the certificates and medals presented to all participants as well as to our regular sponsors Flybe and Serco AquaSplash in providing further funds and necessary equipment. We should not forget to mention the bouys loaned by St Catherine’s Sailing Club and finally the owners of St Catherine’s Cafe for their support with the bacon rolls and cups of tea for the competitors.
Charlie would like to ensure that his grateful thanks are extended to anyone who helped in any way and whose name does not appear above. He has not forgotten you ( your name is just temporarily mislaid) and he extends a heart warmed thank you to you all.
