Safe Sea Swimming
Before swimming, remember:
- Always arrange to swim with a buddy (someone of a similar ability/pace)
- Ensure you have the correct kit with you e.g. Tow Float/brightly coloured swim cap/warm layers for afterward
- Check the tides/weather. Be prepared to change plans or cancel if the forecast is not safe. Select a sheltered venue. For more information on weather and tides check out our weather page.
- Remember, unless swimming with an organised club it is best to swim at a lifeguarded beach
During your swim:
- Wear your tow float and brightly coloured swim hat so you are visible from the shoreline and to boat users etc.
- Find a safe entry/exit point
- Enter the water slowly (especially in cold water) - To help yourself acclimatise, splash cold water on your neck and face
- Always swim with a buddy
- Stay within your depth (where possible) and swim parallel to the shoreline
- Remember to swim within your limits. Swim only as far as you are comfortable with. Remember you will need to swim back too so it is always better so attempt shorter distances and repeat them.
After your swim:
- Get dried and dressed quickly when you exit the water
- Have a warm drink if possible and keep moving to get the blood circulating
- Don't step straight into a hot shower - allow your body to warm up naturally first
